Work Without Permit Fees Increase

In its ongoing effort to increase construction safety, the DOB is increasing penalties for work without permit violations and stop work orders with a series of Local Laws.

Local Law 156 increases work without a permit fees. Work without a permit fees for one or two-family homes will increase from the current four times cost of the permit to six. The minimum penalty for work without a permit also increases from $500 to $600. Maximum penalties for one to two-family homes.

Buildings larger than one or two-family face much larger work without permit increases. Fees increase from 14 times cost of the permit to 21 times the amount. Minimum fees increase from $5,000 to $6,000.  The maximum penalties increase to $15,000.

In addition to work without a permit fee increases, the DOB will now closely monitor repeat violators with a watch list, as mandated by Local Law 155. Which contractors make the watch list? Any contractor that has earned a work without a permit violation in the last two years. If a contractor on the watch list has an ongoing project, they can expect a visit from a DOB inspector at least once. Contractors are removed from the watch list upon completing two years without acquiring a work without a permit violation. The watch list will begin publication on December 28th, 2017.

The DOB is also increasing fees for contractors that violate stop work order issuances. Local Law 157 increases fees from $5,000 to $6,000 for the initial violation and from $10,000 to $12,000 for subsequent violations.
